Understanding how the nervous system controls movement across the lifespan
We study how the brain and body work together to keep us upright and moving, and how that control changes with age, fatigue, neurodiversity (such as autism and Down syndrome), and neurodegenerative and neurological conditions (such as Parkinson's disease and stroke).
Based in the heart of Silicon Valley, our lab works closely with colleagues in engineering, applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to movement data with the goal of developing AI-integrated, wearable digital health technologies for neuromotor assessment and risk prediction. We also collaborate widely with scholars around the world.
What we study
These connected questions run through the lab's work.
Aging, fatigue, and fall risk
How aging and fatigue change the way people stand and walk, and what that means for staying safe and mobile.
Brain and behavior in movement control
How the nervous system and muscles organize posture and gait, and what movement reveals about that control.
Intelligent movement assessment
AI-integrated and wearable technologies that bring neuromotor assessment beyond the laboratory.
Neurodiversity and neurodegeneration across the lifespan
Motor function in neurodivergent populations (such as autism and Down syndrome) and in movement disorders and neurological conditions (such as Parkinson's disease and stroke).
Work with us
We welcome graduate students, undergraduate research assistants, and community members interested in taking part in our studies.
